My WV Vaca — Charleston

Today I traveled to Charleston, WV. Even with the rain and clouds my views were stunning! I changed up my plans a bit and stopped for lunch first in hopes that the rain would wrap up. I wanted to eat at the Cathedral Café in Fayetteville but it was packed. It was still neat to be inside the church turned café! I wandered around for a bit but apparently everyone in Fayetteville had the same idea so I ended up at Tudor’s Biscuit Company which I’m guessing is a regional fast food place. It did the trick.
Next stop was the New River Gorge Bridge which is part of the newest National Park. OMG it was awesome. Every single one of the 178 steps was worth the view. Next time I’ll take the bridge walk (under the bridge) tour.
Third stop was The Mystery Hole. Again, it was crowded so I enjoyed the view from the parking lot, wandered the very interesting gift shop, and moved on. There was a wait to tour the actual mystery tour and I knew I wanted to get to Charleston before the state museum closed.
My last nature stop of the day was Cathedral Falls. This was a quick but fun stop. I was expecting more of a hike to the waterfall but it’s an easy stop off the highway. I loved the waterfall but I think the rock formations are even more interesting.
I checked into the hotel and then ran down to the capital and the WV State Museum. Lots of interesting stuff in there beyond coal mines and railroads. Did you know WV has changed its capital four times?
I wandered around downtown, mostly looking for parking, and had dinner at The Block. Another yummy burger and probably the best fries in a long time! Ice Cream at Ellen’s Homemade Ice Cream and then back to the hotel. Tomorrow I head to Shepherdstown with a stop in Morgantown!
